In the early 1970s, transgender activities were not only looked down on, they were vilified. Only in secret could members of the Transgender community meet, socialize, and feel comfortable.
And then there was Provincetown.
Okay, so Provincetown existed before the 1970s, however its reputation of tolerance and of being a (then) LGB destination made it the perfect host-town choice for the very first Fantasia Fair in 1975. Created to satisfy "the need for crossdressers and transsexuals to learn about themselves in an open, socially tolerant environment," the initial fair was a success with 40 participants, and help from area residents, doctors, and cosmetic consultants. From there, "The Fair" has evolved into an annual celebration of gender diversity, and is a source for education, social interaction, and practical knowledge that draws people from both inside and outside the U.S. It is officially the longest-running annual transgender event. The Distinctive Inns of Provincetown invite you in for first-class accommodations during the 2012 Fantasia Fair on October 14-21, 2012.
Fair attendees will certainly be busy. The week-long Schedule of Events includes seminars on everything from appearance tips to social and medical issues, keynote speakers after lunches, various activities throughout the week, a tour of both P-Town and the Truro Winery, and special events in the evenings. Choose your schedule wisely, as some activities overlap! If you find yourself with gaps in your schedule, stroll through town and enjoy our art, shops, restaurants, and the beach without fear of judgement or prejudice. Fantasia Fair is especially attentive to the partners, spouses, and families of transgendered participants. So much so that partners are offered a generous discount for the event in the hopes that the sessions, and spending time with both other partners of transgenders and other transgender couples may help provide insight, information, and advice. Some workshops have been created specifically for those in transgender relationships!
But it isn't only the Fair-goers that enjoy and benefit from the event: the entire town enjoys having Fantasia Fair each year! Just like the fair-goers, locals make friends with visitors whom they get to catch up with year after year. The community both enjoys seeing the activities happening around them, and can appreciate how much it means for the attendees to have a destination where they can truly be themselves without fear or prejudice. And the feeling must be mutual, because fair-goers also do their part to give back by raising money for a number of charities and organizations here.
No matter what, you will develop and learn as a Fantasia Fair participant. And you will also have a lot of fun! Registration includes receptions, Monday breakfast and Sunday Brunch, all sessions, lunches each day, two special tours, some dinners and all evening events and entertainment planned by the Fair. You'll even get special discounts for Provincetown lodging at many of our welcoming bed and breakfast inns - just mention that you will be attending The Fair!
Registration is currently open for this unparallelled event, so reserve your spot, plan your stay, and enjoy a fantastic week here at the friendliest city on the East Coast!
