Family Week Welcomes LGBT Families to Provincetown

According to the UCLA Williams Institute School of Law, more than 110,000 LGBT couples are currently raising children.  That's a guesstimated 17% of all same-sex couples in the United States!  While children in same-sex marriages probably don't think twice about having parents of the same gender, they may notice that not everyone is in the same boat.  That's where Provincetown's Family Equality Council comes in, hosting the annual Family Week (previously known as "Family Pride Week") event.

In 1996, a visiting couple brought their two children with them on a Provincetown vacation.  As we all know, Provincetown has its own share of gay parents.  Upon meeting many of these families, the visiting couple invited 15 of these area families to a dinner at the house they were renting.  This not only gave the parents a chance to compare notes, but it gave the children a chance to see other families similar to their own.

This gathering became what is now an annual event of hundreds of same-sex-led families, and prospective parents and friends, from the U.S. and around the world.  The gathering has grown to include programs, workshops, entertainment, support, and friendship.

What may come as a surprise to some is the number of 'straight' families and attendees.  Promoting acceptance, these open-minded guests care enough to expand the horizons of children and other family members.  And we imagine they enjoy taking in the wisdom and knowledge of the programs and workshops as well.

The 17th Annual Family Week is the week of Saturday July 28 through Saturday August 4, 2012.  Expect to find family-friendly events like movie nights, beach activities, picnics, a family parade and dance, and much more.  We also look forward to hearing from Zach Walls, co-chair of Family Equality Council’s ‘The Outspoken Generation’ program and Iowa legislative speaker, at the Kick-off Gathering!

Registration ends on July 22, so be sure to make your reservations in advance.  A full schedule of events for adults, youth, and children is available with admission.
